Publisher Description

MA Journey is a training journal built for martial artists: from white belt to black belt and every step between. Designed for martial artists who want to remember the work, understand the progress, and keep the journey with them.

Track your training, reflect on your progress, follow your journey, record competition results, and build a personal technique library across Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, and other martial arts.

This is not a generic workout tracker. MA Journey is built around the way martial artists actually train: classes, open mats, private lessons, seminars, sparring rounds, belt promotions, stripes, competition matches, instructors, schools, techniques, reflections, and long-term progress over years.

TRAIN WITH CONTINUITY
- Log detailed training sessions with date, duration, session type, Gi or No-Gi, instructor, location, school, tags, techniques practiced, sparring rounds, effort level, notes, sleep, and photo attachments.
- Add post-training reflections, guided journal entries, and longer self-discovery notes so your training history becomes more than a list of workouts. Search across sessions and reflections to revisit lessons, patterns, and milestones.

TRACK YOUR MARTIAL ARTS PROGRESS
- View your progress by martial art with stats for sessions, training hours, weekly averages, techniques, streaks, activity patterns, instructors, locations, and more.
- Filter your progress by 30 days, 90 days, 1 year, or all time. Set weekly training goals for each art and review your consistency over time with charts, heatmaps, and detailed statistics.

FOLLOW YOUR BELT JOURNEY
- MA Journey includes deep belt and rank tracking for martial artists who want to preserve their promotion history.
- Track your current rank, promotion timeline, time at each belt, and belt-period statistics. Compare how you trained between promotions, such as your time at white belt, blue belt, or since your most recent stripe.
- Rank tracking can be enabled or disabled per martial art, so you can still log full training analytics for arts where belts are not part of your journey.

COMPETE WITH BETTER RECORDS
- Record competition events, dates, locations, rulesets, Gi or No-Gi format, divisions, weight classes, results, and match-by-match details.
- Track opponents, wins, losses, submissions, points, notes, reference links, and post-event reflections.
- Review stats, match history, and podium results over time.

BUILD YOUR TECHNIQUE LIBRARY
- Create a personal martial arts technique library organized by category, tags, proficiency, confidence, and favorites.
- Link techniques directly to training sessions so you can see what you practiced, when you practiced it, and how your understanding develops over time.

SUPPORT FOR MULTIPLE MARTIAL ARTS
Train more than one discipline? MA Journey supports multiple martial arts in one journal.

APPLE HEALTH INTEGRATION
- Connect training sessions with workouts from Apple Health, including Apple Watch and other supported fitness sources.
- View heart rate and active energy for linked workouts, and include wearable training data alongside your martial arts journal.

SYNC, BACKUP, AND OWN YOUR HISTORY
- MA Journey supports iCloud sync across iPhone and iPad using a private CloudKit container.
- Your training history matters. Export manual backups, import backups, merge data, restore missing entries, and protect your journal with safety snapshots
- Export your data as a formatted PDF Book/Report

Version History Minor bug fix where sometimes workout data would refresh and clear saved Heart Rate information until re-synced from Health. 3.3.6 23h ago Fixed a minor bug on editing techniques assigned to a session to ensure the edited name stays with the session and the old version removes form the session instead of leaving both. 3.3.5 Sep 25 Minor tweak to the display of a couple of stats and the addition of a "+" button on the stats page for adding promotions in addition to the existing "+" button in the journey view where you previously had to navigate to add promotions. 3.3.4 Sep 17 There was a minor display bug in the FitInsights Engine that required a bump. This version now uses that updated engine version. 3.3.3 Sep 10 This version adds the ability to store your organization IDs in the app as well (with IBJJF going to only digital cards this is an easy way to have your ID handy). No limit on number of organizations and support for both renewable and one-time issue identification.

Also in this version are a handful of usability tweaks:
- Settings accessible from all main screens instead of just the training session screen
- If you track individual sparring rounds you can now reorder them if necessary
- Current streak in the stats page now calculates from the last completed week if the current week is still open instead of reporting zero (0)
- Time in rank calculations would occasionally seem off because of the way we were calculating weeks and the calendar transitions between weeks/months, so now we're using elapsed time instead and should reliably show accurate numbers 3.3.2 Sep 2 This version specifically addresses two small visibility tweaks: total duration of sparring is now calculated and shown on training sessions (so that you can easily track how much time you are averaging in sparring rounds), and the statistics page has had the average number of sessions per week clarified to explain what it is actually calculating (the original presentation could be confusing). 3.3.1 Aug 27 This version expands the ability to log multiple sparring rounds of differing durations on training sessions, or you can continue to use the average overall duration like before. Logging individual rounds allows you the flexibility to add per round notes as well, and rounds (including the old average) have a little more granularity in durations that you can choose instead of being confined to whole minutes only (rule is 30 seconds to 5 minutes in 15 second intervals, then everything above 5 minutes in 1 minute intervals up to 90 minutes). 3.3.0 Aug 20 Tweaks to the FitInsights Engine and minor performance improvements. This bump is mostly to keep FitInsights and MA Journey on the same public version of the FitInsights Engine 3.2.5 Aug 13 FitInsights Engine Integration!

Now on training sessions you can see a basic snapshot of your morning readiness and after-session impact leveraging the FitInsights Engine from the FitInsights App, now also available on the App Store! 3.2.0 Jul 29 MA Journey has been completely rebuilt from the ground up.

This version introduces a new four-tab experience for Train, Progress, Compete, and Library, with deeper martial arts journaling, multi-art support, rank tracking, belt-period statistics, competition logging, technique management, iCloud sync, Apple Health integration, manual backup and restore, and a more complete iPhone and iPad experience.

New in this version:

This time I think it is finally resolved.

This release includes the previously mentioned addition of the test category in the technique library from 2.1.2 2.1.3 Jan 2 2.1.2 fixes a training entry bug that would show up under certain circumstances and affect two items: the go/no-gi selection not being stored and sometimes a new technique would have to be re-added to an entry.

This version also adds a section in the technique library for tests (whether for belt or other tests specific to your art, but I use it as a place to put in belt tests and the test details just like a technique). 2.1.2 12/31/2025 Quality of Life Improvements:
- Tweaks to charts for readability
- Tapable techniques in the journal! Now you can tap on the technique in the journal to go directly to that technique in your library.
- New sparring statistics (only visible if you log training entries)
- New second Generic belt system option to try to accommodate multiple use cases (note there is no actual enforcement on progression order, so you can technically select whatever combination in whatever order you need for your style)
- New time at belt chart at the bottom of the Journey view

Assorted display bugs squashed (hopefully).
One journal entry related bug squashed. 2.1.1 10/06/2025 - Fixed a couple of visual bugs relating to star ratings being errantly displayed as filled when the value was actually 0.

- Resolved an issue where promotion entries sometimes displayed the incorrect belt graphic.
- Restored the ability to view currently included belt ranking systems. 2.0.4 04/24/2025 Bug Fixes
- Gi/No-Gi selector for training sessions was being finicky
- Thumbnails were not reliably showing up in competition entries
- On load media was not reliably zooming to the appropriate size in competition entries

Please Consider Adding a Review or Rating the App! 2.0.3 04/07/2025 Bug Fixes:
- Autocomplete and Selection From Autocomplete Bug Under Certain Circumstances Were Not Selectable

New Features:
- Additional Competition Entry Fields for Match Details per Competition
- Added Media Attachment Options for Competitions
- Added Ability to Save URLs for Competitions 2.0.2 04/05/2025 - Addressed a bug that could make technique entry or tag entry non-functional under certain circumstances 2.0.1 04/01/2025 What’s New in 2.0?

- Enhanced Journal Entries – Log training sessions with details like instructor, location, gi/no-gi, class type, techniques, sparring rounds, and physical metrics (motivation, diet, intensity).

- Journey Tracking – Visualize your progress through ranks and promotions over time, with insights into how long you’ve spent at each level.

- Advanced Training Statistics – View detailed metrics on your training frequency, consistency, gi vs. no-gi breakdown, and averages over 30, 60, 90, 180, and 365 days—or your lifetime.

- Competition Log – Record tournaments by martial art, including division, ruleset, results, and performance trends over time.

- New Technique Library – Organize and categorize techniques by type (submissions, takedowns, guard, strikes, etc.), add tags, notes, and media, and quickly link techniques to past training sessions.

version 3.3.5

posted on 2026-09-26

Version History Fixed a minor bug on editing techniques assigned to a session to ensure the edited name stays with the session and the old version removes form the session instead of leaving both. 3.3.5 9h ago Minor tweak to the display of a couple of stats and the addition of a "+" button on the stats page for adding promotions in addition to the existing "+" button in the journey view where you previously had to navigate to add promotions.

• Completely redesigned native iOS and iPadOS app
• Multi-art support for BJJ, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, and custom martial arts
• Detailed training session logging with tags, instructors, locations, schools, techniques, sparring rounds, notes, photos, and reflections
• New Progress tab with training stats, weekly goals, heatmaps, streaks, charts, and detailed analytics

version 3.3.2

posted on 2026-09-04

Version History This version adds the ability to store your organization IDs in the app as well (with IBJJF going to only digital cards this is an easy way to have your ID handy).

- Time in rank calculations would occasionally seem off because of the way we were calculating weeks and the calendar transitions between weeks/months, so now we're using elapsed time instead and should reliably show accurate numbers 3.3.2 2d ago This version specifically addresses two small visibility tweaks: total duration of sparring is now calculated and shown on training sessions (so that you can easily track how much time you are averaging in sparring rounds), and the statistics page has had the average number of sessions per week clarified to explain what it is actually calculating (the original presentation could be confusing).

- Tweaks to charts for readability
- Tapable techniques in the journal! Now you can tap on the technique in the journal to go directly to that technique in your library.

- Resolved an issue where promotion entries sometimes displayed the incorrect belt graphic.
